Una Página Nueva

I want to learn more Spanish. I took Spanish for many years in school, but I’m afraid it’s fading from lack of use. I understand enough to get by, but I want more. I want a deeper understanding, I want to feel more comfortable speaking it.

I signed up for an online class, so I’m hoping that will help me refresh my memory and expand my knowledge. I read a novel in Spanish for a class in college and was always so proud of myself when I was able to discuss it in class, even though it was frustrating having to read so slowly in order to garner any semblance of comprehension. I’ve been able to read in English with full comprehension for as long as I can remember, but I imagine this is what it’s like for the first graders I’ve worked with in some of my student teaching placements. They have the ability to decode the word, but not the skills to decipher meaning from them. It’s frustrating.

Sometimes I’ll think I understand it. I’ll be able to read the sign on the subway or catch the drift of the conversation two strangers are having. But then I’ll try to say something or not be able to follow along. I get sad and frustrated and just want to know already.

So I’ve officially added something to my list of goals for 2012, along with walking the length of Manhattan and finally visiting the Statue of Liberty, I will read a novel in Spanish.
